It Doesn’t Look Like Much (Yet)

There’s nothing quite like sleeping with the window open in early spring. It’s still chilly out but not cold enough to cause frost bite and it feels amazing to breathe in the fresh, cool air and to wake up hearing the birds singing the day awake.

I would love to sing along but first thing in the morning my throat is usually already closing off and I’m hoarse thanks to my overnight medicine wearing off. Until my morning dose kicks in, it’s best that I don’t talk or sing at all just in case it worsens and full anaphylaxis sets in and decides to kill me.

It’s just my reality living with mast cell disease.

Luckily it hasn’t killed me yet, because I have things to do! This morning I set up my little squirrel feeding station which basically consists of me putting out little snacks on a stump under the maple tree in the front yard…

It’s nothing fancy but I’m hoping this keeps them from raiding my garden in the back. I’m pretty sure this is going to backfire though. 😂

Speaking of my garden, this time of year is when things are just starting to happen so it also doesn’t look like much – yet. I am happy to report that the carrots and lettuce are sprouting…

Also, my rosemary plants came so I unpacked them right away to make sure all was well with them (it was).

I put them in with the basil, thyme and these carnation seedlings that are coming right along…

I have had really good luck ordering from Bonnie Plants every single time. I had less luck with my Aerogarden seed pods. Many of them either didn’t sprout or did and then died, but the basil and cherry tomatoes did great. I was hesitant to transplant the tomato plants into soil but I wanted to grow these in the raised beds instead of indoors all summer.

Why waste money on electric lighting when we have all this sunshine? The Aerogarden can be put away until fall now.

So far they are doing well in their new pots in the greenhouse…

I can’t put them in the raised beds for a few more weeks as it’s still pretty cold overnight so we’ll see how they do then. I was afraid to transplant my knockout rose bush yet but so far it’s holding up really well out there in its new spot by the wisteria…

I was also afraid to move the strawberries because they were doing so well where I put them last year but we wanted that space to expand the dog pens so we moved them all over by the asparagus. So far, so good there, too. One had a bit of frost bite damage but that happened while they were overwintering in the snow…

They have settled into the asparagus beds and are thriving, thankfully. The pups are happy, too, because they’re now closer than ever to the chickens and pheasants…

The pheasant rooster seems to like them being closer for some reason and enjoys teasing them even more now…

It also saves me a few steps to walk over and share fresh eggs with them so it’s a win-win for all of us. 😋
