Adventures in Gardening: Weeding, Watering, Wasps & Whatnot

A weed is but an unloved flower!
Go dig, and prune, and guide, and wait,
Until it learns its high estate,
    And glorifies some bower.
A weed is but an unloved flower!

All sin is virtue unevolved,
Release the angel from the clod–
Go love thy brother up to God.
Behold each problem solved.
    All sin is virtue unevolved.

Ella Wheeler

While I appreciate the sentiment, I do not agree with weeds being unloved flowers. Weeds are evil and are every bit as much my enemy as the murder wasps I fight daily just to keep my garden beautiful.

Well, as beautiful as can be in this heat. It’s literally cooking my poor red lilies skin right off…

Other things seem to be more tolerant of the heat, thankfully. The corn is getting tall and the sunflowers are just starting to open. Both are thriving in these sweltering temperatures…

Since I began irrigating the strawberry patch instead of just using the rainbird, they have doubled in size and are filled with berries. I’ll post pictures of them as they ripen. And once I weed that bed again (oy!).

This morning I weeded all of the raised beds and this evening I’ll tackle the in ground ones again, which includes the strawberries. I try to get in and out before and after the murder hornets wake up and bed down again but the problem is, some of them sleep in the flowers!

Particularly the sunflowers.

Ugh.

I have to force myself not to think about it too much or I will just give into the fear and become a recluse who never leaves her house and has to look out the window at an overgrown acre of weeds. 😪
