Taking Shelter

Yesterday was the first day of spring, as I’m sure you’re aware, but it sure didn’t look like it here in the Greater Yellowstone Area (surprise right?). Winter is still hanging on by a thread, or should I say flake.

As in snowflake. Lots of snowflakes. πŸ™„

We got a bit of a snow storm that arrived with spring yesterday which brought a lot of fresh snow along with a blustery wind that kicked up, making it quite miserable out there. We ended up staying in all day rather than taking the risk of driving in the storm up the mountain just to be miserable out in it while mushing.

And I am so glad we did because it was the first time I’ve ever seen so many of the little house finches all at once!

They were sheltering in the pine tree right in front of the bay window upstairs, right in plain view and didn’t even seem to care that I stood right there taking a million photos of them.

Usually we’ll get two or three at the feeder at a time but never a dozen or more. They are just so darned cute!!

The little house sparrows were busy over at the feeder across the yard, waiting patiently for the northern flickers to be done gobbling up their share.

Eventually they got their turn…

We also had a few chickadees come visit…

The funny thing is, all of this was happening just inches above Zumi’s head but she didn’t even notice.

She was too busy pouting about us not going mushing like we’d promised. πŸ˜„
