What’s Good for the Goose?

I love geese. Well, I love wild geese. Domesticated ones not so much. In fact, I have a bit of an irrational fear of them, mostly because as a child I remember the pair of angry geese our elderly neighbor kept who would bite anyone who got too close to them.

Including her!

Sometimes they’d go out of their way to “goose” her, which was actually pretty funny.

More than once you would hear her let out a loud “ouch!” followed by a few naughty words and a threat that she’d get the rake if they didn’t behave.

I’m sure they’re not all like that, but I suspect they are given how many stories I’ve heard over the years about how mean geese can be.

So we don’t keep any here because of my irrational fear of them but I do love photographing all the wild geese in our area. These pictures were taken last winter out at our local wildlife management area.

I grew up hearing that saying “what’s good for the goose is good for the gander” but only just learned today that the original idiom was “what’s sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander”.

Either way, as far as me and geese go, seeing them from afar is my preferred choice. 🙂
