Am I the only one who noticed that there suddenly seems to be names for the full moon that I’ve never heard before? There’s the Worm Moon and the Sturgeon Moon and the Super Bloody Pink Strawberry Wolf Moon (or something like that).
There are so many names thrown out there. Why? Well, I learned there is actually one for every single month, and they weren’t just made up recently to annoy me and you, either!
Full Moon names date back to Native Americans of North America. Tribes kept track of the seasons by giving distinctive names to each recurring full Moon. Full Moon names were applied to the entire month in which each occurred.
There was some variation in the full Moon names, but in general, the same ones were consistent among regional tribes. European settlers followed that custom and created some of their own names.
I did know about the harvest moon tonight, though, which I hope to capture. I’m not sure if I’ll get the chance because it’s cloudy today, but the good thing about the harvest moon is that it lasts three days so hopefully if I don’t get some good shots tonight then I’ll still have a chance tomorrow or the next day.
I’ve been snapping pictures of both the moon and the sun, just for fun.

My cell phone camera sucks lately, and gets worse with each update (grrr) but I was surprised just how good the zoom works on our Canon SX50. It’s not the most expensive camera, for sure, but it does take good pictures.
When I clean the lens, that is. π

We thought about investing in a high end DSL camera with all the bells and whistles but we bought a less expensive (and less complicated) camera first to see if it’s something we’d use enough.

That was just before smart phones started offering quality photo capabilities and we’re glad we got it instead of the DSL because between it and our phones, we have everything we need. Well, hubbies phone at least.

Like I said, the zoom on it is amazing! The sun is millions of miles away!
Seriously, though, what I really need now is a better way to store all the pictures I take and the patience to go through them and sort them properly! π
Gorgeous! And no…I didn’t know about all these different moons either.

It’s funny that there is a name for each full moon. I found out if the harvest moon happens in October then the one in September is called the Corn Moon! I feel so full of useless knowledge now… π
