Among The Wildflowers

I love flowers of all kinds but my absolute favorite are the wildflowers. There’s just something special about the way nature arranges them, especially here in the Rocky Mountains. We are just a few weeks away from peak wildflower season in Yellowstone and I can hardly wait!

Honestly, couldn’t you just die happy here, among the wildflowers? I know I could!

I guess it’s not a coincidence that my favorite song on my favorite album of all time are both titled “Wildflowers”.

You belong among the wildflowers
You belong in a boat out at sea
You belong with your love on your arm
You belong somewhere you feel free

Tom Petty

As we’ve been adding more flower beds we’ve been moving away from the more formal look and more towards the cottage-y look because I find it so damn charming.

Year after year we’ve added another packet or two of wildflower seeds here and there. Like next to the pond…

Around the trees…

In the planters…

Pretty much everywhere we can, we’ve been adding wildflowers.

I thought we had run out of room but I found a few spots over the weekend that could use some color so as soon as the threat of frost passes, these babies are going in.

I know it probably seems counterintuitive for someone who is deathly allergic to bees and wasps to plant more flowers, and it probably is, but I don’t care.

As they say, you only live once. Well, unless you believe in reincarnation. Maybe I was a murderous wasp in my last life and this is my karma?

Anyway, I spend a good deal of my days sitting safely inside, looking out at the world so I want it to be pretty and I do my gardening in the cool, early morning and late evenings, when the wasps (who are more likely to sting) are safely back in their nests. Even in the “safety” of my house I have to worry about being murdered by rogue wasps and hobo spiders regardless, but that’s a different post for a different day.

Wildflowers that come back on their own year after year nudge out the weeds and actually help me spend less time living dangerously out in the flowerbeds and more time inside where it’s safe(r), enjoying the view.

And what a view it is. 🙂

  1. I agree. What a view that is. Looks as though the wildflower seeds like the soil you have as they seem to grow so profusely. Some of those you’ve got as wildflowers are planted in my garden as ‘proper’ flowers, like the cornflowers which I like to have under the roses, and I think I saw some Sweet Williams there too – quite difficult for me to grow these. Enjoy your fabulous views. Looks as though the puppy likes them too!

  2. Love it! We have been planting more and more wildflowers as well, and they definitely bring a special kind of joy. The only difference is that we keep bees, so that adds even more joy when we see our honeybees enjoying the flowers. You are brave and awesome for providing more bee food even though you are allergic!
